The wide pedestrian zone called “Rua Augusta” is located in the district of Baixa. Rua Augusta serves as main artery of Lisbons business and bank quarter. The whole district arose in 1755 after an horrible earthquake.
At the beginning Baixa was the home of the craftsmen. Every craft guild had its own street in the district. Today only the names of the streets remind on that tradition.
