The Hieronymus monastery called “Mosteiro dos Jeronimos” was built in Portugals glorious times. The meaning of the building was not moderate. It was the first thing of Lisbon which the returning seamen should see.
The foundation stone for Mosteiro dos Jeronimos was set in 1501. In those times Portugal was dreaming about having a world empire.

Stories of seamen influenced the architecture of the building. There is a mixture of oriental architectural style, gothic, and renaissance. The contruction works were finished in 1571.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is also the last resting place for very important people of Portugals history. The inside of the building is breathtaking, and offers many impressing surprises.
