Cristo Rei is a monument of Jesus Christ with open arms on the Southern shore of the Tejo river. The monument is a very popular pilgrimage site for religious people, and a wonderful viewpoint over the city for tourists.
There is an elevator which brings the visitor up on a height of 80 metres to the platform of the 28 metres high monument. Cristo Rei was erected in 1959, and should remember the fact that Portugal was not involved into the second world war.
